The ACM conference MMSys 2025, a premier conference on multimedia systems, was successfully co-organised by Silvia Rossi, researcher of the DIS group

The 16th ACM Multimedia Systems Conference (with the associated workshops: NOSSDAV 2025 and MMVE 2025) was held from March 31st to April 4th 2025, in Stellenbosch, South Africa. By choosing this location, the steering committee marked a milestone for SIGMM: MMSys became the very first SIGMM conference to take place on the African continent.
MMSys brings together researchers in multimedia systems to showcase and exchange their cutting-edge research findings. Once again, there were technical talks spanning various multimedia domains and inspiring keynote presentations.
This year the conference was organised by Herman Engelbrecht (Stellenbosch University, South Africa) as general chair, and the senior postdoctoral researcher Silvia Rossi as program coordinator and technical program chair, together with
Simon Gunkel (TNO, Netherlands).

The program included three exciting keynote speeches. The first, “On the Road to Scalable, Interoperable and Cost-Efficient Realistic Holographic
Communications”, delivered by Mario Montagud Climent (University of Valencia and the i2CAT Foundation in Spain), the second keynote, “Art & Tech - A multimedia journey from VR Ndebele painting to iCreative Robotic performances" by Vali Lalioti (University of Arts London, UK), and the third keynote, “Multi-CDN Streaming: Architectures and OptimizationProblems” by Yuriy Reznik (Brightcove).

In addition, the technical program contains a special session on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). A panel, composed by experts from different fields discussed various EDI issues and how diverse and inclusive are the topics, methodologies and evaluations of the Multimedia Systems community. Finally, the first and final days of MMSys’25 were dedicated to two focused and engaging workshops: the 17th International Workshop on Immersive Mixed and Virtual Environment Systems (MMVE), and the long-running 35th ACM SIGMM Workshop on Network and Operating Systems Support for Digital Audio and Video (NOSSDAV).
